About Us

Manx Cancer Help was formed in 1983 by a group of people who had close personal experience with cancer or caring for cancer patients.

The aims of Manx Cancer Help are inspired by Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly the Bristol Cancer Help Centre). Our approach to cancer is a total one offering a programme of healing for the whole person, working at the levels of body, mind and spirit. We aim to complement whatever medical treatment is being given, and to help the whole person, being aware of physical, emotional mental and spiritual needs.

We also hope to provide a supportive link for cancer patients, their families and friends, with sensitive awareness of individual needs. We do not offer medical advice. Our counselling service is available to patients, their families and friends.

Friends and relatives of cancer patients are encouraged to assist in the total care and support of their loved ones. The aim is that a positive and caring approach will extend into the home of the cancer patient by way of family involvement.

Most of the people involved with our organisation are helping themselves to improve their quality of life, and of course, to enhance any medical treatment they are receiving. Manx Cancer Help has a library of helpful books, which those interested may borrow.

We also have a small comfortably furnished room where discussions, advice sessions, reading or even Internet research can be conducted in private without being disturbed.

We publish a quarterly newsletter which contains helpful, informative articles and we are currently undergoing a review which aims to shape the service provided by the charity as it moves forward and harmonises services with other organisations on the Island.

The Charity Office is normally open between 9am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday. An answering machine can take messages outside these hours and the care co-ordinator is available for more pressing matters by mobile at most times.

The Care Co-ordinator of Manx Cancer Help has a seat on the Council of Governors at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology NHS Trust. If anyone has an issue to be raised concerning Clatterbridge Centre for Onocolgy, please contact the Care Co-ordinator so these can be addressed.
